Dear Waitsfield Elementary School families,
Have you learned something new today? Have you tried something that challenged you and/or pushed you out of your comfort zone? As I walk through the building, I'm struck by how frequently our students take these healthy risks. Each new experience that we engage in causes our brains to grow new neuron connections; I'm sure that brain scans of our kids would show a lot of pathways forming each day. A terrific way to support your child is to model the behavior you are encouraging for him or her; talk about new things you're learning and challenges you've faced (and how you felt within them). Knowing that adults "do it too" is great encouragement in the hard work we ask of them every day.
I appreciate that getting back into the routines of school also requires more brain activity and effort at the start of the school year. I think that our new routine of having students go directly to the classrooms between 7:30 and 7:40 is creating a smoother start to the day. Thank you to Laura Caffry, Amy Rochford and Cheryl Kingsbury who are also helping to supervise children on the playground between 7:30 and 7:40. If you're willing to similarly volunteer, please let me know. If your child arrives at school before 7:30, please know that there is not supervision then. If you drive your children to school, please do NOT drop them off without pulling in to a parking space--not pulling in creates a dangerous situation for children in the driving area and also backs up the parking lot.
